AWAKENING SPIRIT THROUGH MEDITATIONAll traditions indicate that man has two natures. First, an innate, essential, or spiritual Self we are born with and which is an integral part of the Universal Creative Spirit, and having access to all of Its intelligence and wisdom. This essential Self however generally becomes overshadowed by a lower, conditioned, or mechanical self, a conglomeration or composite of unintentionally acquired patterns of physical, emotional, and intellectual reactions and identifications. This mechanical-reactive self is sometimes called the false personality. Meditation, as explored in this class, consists of many techniques useful towards interrupting the mechanical patterns and identifications of the personality self, and awakening awareness to the true impulses coming from the essential Self. These mediation techniques should be used in daily formal sessions, but just as importantly they should be used throughout the day in all life situations. Angella Focas is an artist, poet, and inspirational counselor who practices therapeutic touch and reads Egyptian cartouche cards at Quest Bookshop. She has studied many spiritual traditions over the years. Steven Coisson is a photographer and professional hypnotist who has also studied many spiritual traditions, but is devoted primarily to the fourth way teachings of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. Angella and Steven are founding members of Awakening Spirit Meditation and Healing Center in Bayside, Queens. At the New York Theosophical Society
